Jaw reduction with Botox®
Jaw reduction is for some patients who prefer not to have a slightly squarish face, and to correct this, Botulinum toxin, a naturally purified protein, is painlessly administered directly into the masseter to give more of a V shape to your face.
Jaw reduction involves injecting Botulinum toxin into the masseter muscle which will give non-surgical facial contouring and treat benign masseteric hypertrophy. The effect takes at least two months before it is apparent, and can last more than a year in most patients, using the high-dose approach. If using the low-dose approach, then the treatment needs to be repeated every few months.
Who is an appropriate candidate for the jaw reduction with Botox® and TMJ?
Botulinum toxin type A can be used off-label to treat bruxism (teeth grinding which can cause TMJ or temporomandibular pain, headaches or even cracked teeth), in addition to aesthetically enhancing your face.
How does Botox®/Xeomin® reduce the size of my jaws?
When Botox®/Xeomin® is injected into the muscle it partially relaxes it. Underused muscle eventually loses its mass and reduces in overall size. The aesthetic effect of reducing an overly wide jawline is only truly appreciated in the right candidate. That is why Stacey Power (Registered Nurse) personally evaluates every candidate’s face in order to determine whether jaw reduction procedure is right for the individual.
Will I have problems chewing my food?
Although rare, few people may experience some tiring after chewing for a while. This phenomenon is only temporary and will go away over time.
Is jaw reduction procedure painful?
Since the smallest available needles are used, minimal to no discomfort is felt during the procedure.
What is the downtime after Botox®/Xeomin® jaw reduction and TMJ procedure?
As with any procedure involving needles, there is a small chance of mild bruising or mild transient redness at the area of injection. The procedure takes about 5 minutes and you may drive after it. There are no restrictions on your activity thereafter.
When will I see a difference and how long will the result last?
Within two months, you will see the effects, which can last from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the dose of Botulinum toxin used. The most frequent comment patients will hear is people telling them they look like they have lost weight, as their face has slimmed down.
Although a single high dose of Botulinum toxin to the masseter can achieve a result lasting for over a year, it is better to maintain the desired shape with more frequent, smaller doses of Botulinum toxin after 6 to 9 months.
